The Organic Shandy, the first organic store in Chennai, was founded by organic farmers, Hari Sethuraman and P.B.Murali. The need for authentic organic produce to reach the market directly from farmers, and their experience of working closely with them, motivated Hari and Murali to launch Sunday Shandy, in 1998. This was initially a weekly market for fresh organic produce brought directly by farmers from around Chennai.
Today, The Shandy is a bustling marketplace that sells a range of organic produce sourced from farmers and artisans, from all over India, making them available to customers and retail outlets everyday. The products include fruits, vegetables, grains, cereals, spices, fresh milk, fresh paneer, freshly ground flours, dry fruits, and much more. Over the years, the store has earned a formidable reputation as a preferred supplier of farm-fresh organic produce to even the most reputed retailers, owing to store’s continuous supply, quality and the high level of safety of their produce. The Shandy continues to be a whole sale supplier of organic produce to many institutions and stores across the country.
The Shandy’s flagship product, is their award winning Organic Mangoes (PGS certified) cultivated at their Orchard, at Punnamai Village, Cheyyur Taluk, Tamil Nadu. The farm, established 28 years ago by the duo, has over 6000 mango trees. It is also home to other fruit trees and cash crops including sapota, coconut, banana, paddy, chillies, sesame, groundnuts, lime and vegetables. The entire farm is pesticide and chemical free, which has a telling effect on the produce. The Punnamai farm, today, is a model for many organic farmers across India. It has been developed like a forest and the verdant surroundings play host to various species of birds and small animals.
At The Shandy, we have rigorous standards in place to ensure that all of our products are natural and of high quality. All the farms that we source from are inspected on a regular basis by our team. The farmers who send their produce to The Shandy are people who have been working with us on this mission for over 2 decades now.
Hari has a B.Tech from IIT Madras. He has been a serial entrepreneur, his last venture being a Digital Agency, which he exited in 2011 to pursue his passion in Organic Farming full time. Hari is an ardent believer of Organic Farming and has been practicing the same since 1995. Since then he has been experimenting with various crops in his field and in the process improving the soil quality. Hari brings commercial discipline to The Shandy and its network of farmers who greatly value his ability to manage a social enterprise with infinite variables and logistical planning, yet meet all the objectives of quality, productivity and financial viability for all the farmers.
Murali is a graduate from The Madras Christian College. Murali has served as a sales and marketing executive in reputed firms. His family has been involved in Agriculture for generations and he continues this tradition. Murali has been awarded the Best Organic Farmer by the Tamilnadu Agriculture University for his work in the field of Organic mangoes and he has been awarded the title “ Mangani Chemmal”. He has also been guiding many of the current generation of Organic farmers over the years to improve their soil, cropping pattern as well as quality of produce. He has been a managing committee member for Organic Farming Association of India (OFAI), PGS , Tamilnadu Mango Growers Association, Foundation for Organic Agriculture amongst others.
